Umno’s internal war has nothing to do with me, says Anwar

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he was no longer a member of Umno and had nothing to do with the party’s internal fights. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Kamal Ariffin, February 5, 2015.Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he has nothing to do with the infighting plaguing ruling party Umno despite his willingness to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)'s probe against former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin. The opposition leader said allegations of Daim's abuse of power had been around since 1999.“I am not involved in Umno’s internal fight," he said.“I am no longer an Umno member. My statement at that time was referring to Tun Daim.“It's been so long, since 1999, and I have lodged a police report previously. I even showed documents and submitted it in court," he told reporters after launching senator Dr Syed Husin Ali's book in Shah Alam today.Daim was recently subjected to attacks in Barisan Nasional-controlled Bahasa Malaysia and English media.Daim’s banking business overseas is currently being investigated by the MACC, years after he was cleared of wrongdoing.Last month, Anwar said he would assist in an MACC probe against Daim. His comments were given wide play in mainstream media which has traditionally been hostile to the Pakatan Rakyat coalition which he leads. This fuelled speculation that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s camp is ratcheting up a campaign to silence his powerful critics in Umno, namely long serving former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Daim. This prompted the former chief of Umno-linked New Straits Times Datuk A. Kadir Jasin to say that Anwar had been made an unknowing player in the prime minister’s attempt to silence his two most influential critics. – February 5, 2015.MORE TO COME
