Anwar’s family’s right to apply for royal pardon, says Ahmad Maslan

He says it is the right of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family to apply for a royal pardon. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Nazir Sufari, February 25, 2015.Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan today said it was the right of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's family to apply for a royal pardon.He added that the party would monitor the development and that its machinery in Permatang Pauh was ready for anything, including the possibility of a no by-election."That is Anwar family's right to apply for royal pardon, despite PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli saying it could mean an admission of guilt."For us, we will just wait and see what happens," he said.Yesterday, Anwar's family handed over a petition to a representative from Istana Negara seeking a royal pardon for de facto PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his sodomy conviction.His daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is PKR vice-president, said the petition for the pardon was made on the basis that the conviction failed to adhere to the principles of justice.PKR also has come out in support of the move by the Anwar's family, despite the opposition leader’s earlier refusal to seek it.Party vice-president Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, said the party leadership respected and understood the decision to seek royal intervention against the opposition leader’s conviction.On February 10, a five-man bench led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria found Anwar guilty of having carnal intercourse with his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.The Federal Constitution states that the seat will not be declared vacant until the Pardons Board has deliberated and made a decision.Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, in a statement yesterday, said that Anwar was still an MP, pending a decision on his petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a royal pardon. – February 25, 2015.
