Not baaad: Boy is Mutton Bustin' champ with 22-sec. ride

Colt Jackson lasted nearly three times that.On Monday night, the 6-year-old competed in the annual Justin Mutton Bustin' contest at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. But while most children last only three or four seconds hanging on to the sheep as it jumps out of the chute, this little pardner from Irving endured for more than 20 seconds.Colt Jackson is 43 pounds of pure cowboy."I was trying to spur him, but there was so much wool my spur got stuck," Colt recalled. The boy's family has long participated in local, junior rodeo events. Colt's parents say he takes it a step further, though, in his day-to-day life."Even if it's 105 (degrees) in the middle of the summer, he thinks he should be wearing boots, jeans and a button-down shirt," said his mom, Amy Jackson.Larry Jackson, Colt's dad, said he tried to sign up his youngest son for the contest the past few years but it was always full. He initially feared the same thing this year until another child dropped out, and suddenly Colt found himself in the chute ready to ride."I remember it really well," he said. "If you're falling that way, shift your weight that way. If you're falling that way, shift your weight to the left."It's a logical approach, but one Jackson admits not every youngster can easily grasp."Most only last a few seconds," he said. "Once he got through a couple of turns, I knew he had it."The stock show doesn't keep official records on the Mutton Bustin', but the family said everyone in the crowd thought it was a one-of-a-kind ride. Most YouTube videos show kids lasting only five to six seconds. The crowd could be heard cheering wildly as Colt maneuvered the sheep throughout the arena during his 22-second ride.It actually was the animal itself that stumbled."I got a 90 score," he said while looking at his trophy.Colt said he's eager to ride calves, and perhaps do saddle bronc or bull rides soon after that.Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dead at 90Jan 23, 2015
