Bigger drop in Malaysians’ trust in Putrajaya if poll done now, says DAP

Lim Kit Siang of DAP questions the trust that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has in his own Cabinet and government after making the budget revision announcement yesterday without any Cabinet consensus nor the endorsement of a special parliamentary sitting. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 21, 2015.A global survey that found more than half of Malaysians distrustful of Putrajaya would have yielded even worse findings had the study been conducted this year, DAP said today. The opposition party's parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said the 2015 Edelman Trust Barometer survey would have plunged to the "thirties" percentile instead of the current 45% if it was conducted in the New Year instead of late last year, due to five events.Lim said the first of these events was the massive floods at the end of 2014 which devastated the northeastern states of Peninsular Malaysia and displaced more than 200,000 people at its height. He also cited the open letter by 25 prominent retired Malay civil servants calling for a discourse on Islam which received huge support from Malaysians worried about frayed race relations, and the ongoing problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah which have changed the demographics of the Borneo state.

Others include the fallout from Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's letter to the FBI vouching for alleged gambling kingpin Paul Phua. This was followed by Putrajaya's "humongous denial complex" with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's declaration that Malaysia was not facing any economic crisis."Malaysians' trust in Putrajaya would have plunged far below 45% into the region of the thirties if the survey had been conducted in the new year of 2015, and not between November 13 and November 24 last year," Lim said in a statement today. The survey by global public relations firm Edelman found that only 45% of Malaysians trusted the government, down from last year's 54%.In contrast, the survey showed neighbouring Singapore and Indonesia had garnered higher level of trusts from their people, registering 70% and 72% respectively. The island republic saw only a 5% decline in trust from last year's 75%, while Indonesians’ trust in their government jumped by 19% from 53% last year.Lim said coming at a time when people have such low trust in the government, Najib himself had little trust in the Cabinet and Parliament. The Gelang Patah MP said this was exemplified by Najib's revised budget yesterday which he claimed was never brought to Cabinet for approval, nor to an emergency parliamentary sitting to approve the revisions."Did the Cabinet at its meeting today discuss the 2015 Edelman Trust Barometer survey that only 45% of Malaysians trusted the government, down from last year's 54%?" Lim asked. – January 21, 2015.
